Figure Competitions

Source of Motivation

Whether you just starting out in figure competitions, a seasoned pro or just want to lose a few pounds and look like a figure competitor, staying motivated is key to your success. Without knowing your motivation or goal, we tend to get quickly sidelined and never achieve our final goal.

If your goal is just compete in a figure competition, not necessarily win, it is important you visualize yourself as a pro figure competitor. Standing on stage among many professionals who have competed previously can seem daunting. Your mindset should be focused on succeeding, and being determined to not let the other competitors feel like you do not belong on stage. If you want to be the part, you need to first act the part! Act like a professional and you will feel like one. No matter how scared or nervous you are, do not let intimidation rule your mindset.

A very good source of motivation is seeing changes in your body in response to your weight training and diet. It is very hard to feel discouraged when you see positive changes happening and you are getting closer to achieving your goal. Keep track of your body changes, whether it is by weight, body fat percentage, muscle growth or muscle strength. A journal is a great way to document these changes so you can look back over them and see all the progress you have made.

Having an accountability partner is always a good idea. We have those days of not wanting to go to the gym, go train or stick to our diet. We sometimes need a little kick in the butt when we feel unmotivated. Having that partner next to you giving you words of encouragement is sometimes motivation enough. Other times it helps to report on a regular basis to your partner about your progress. It is very hard to skip a workout or eat a cheat meal when you know you have to tell someone about it.

A supportive family is always a great motivator. Your family will always be there for you and they have your best interests in mind. When you feel like eating that popcorn or ice cream, they will step in and remind you of why you are competing in a figure competition in the first place. We all want our families to be proud of us, so knowing they are behind you every step of the way will help you persevere and reach your goal.
